Summer Squall euthanized! [27 Sep 2009|02:08am]

sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=4495883

VERSAILLES, Ky. -- Former Preakness champion Summer Squall was euthanized Tuesday at Lane's End Farm due to complications of old age. He was 22.

Summer Squall finished second in the 1990 Kentucky Derby behind Unbridled, then returned the favor in the Preakness following a thrilling stretch duel in which he pulled away along the rail.

He did not compete in the Belmont Stakes but returned as a 4-year-old and won the Fayette Handicap in 1991.

Following his racing career, Summer Squall went to stand at Lane's End. Prominent offspring include 1999 Kentucky Derby winner Charismatic and former champion 2-year-old filly Storm Song.

Owned by Dogwood Stables and trained by Neil Howard, Summer Squall won 13 races and earned over $1.8 million during his career.

Hi! Me again, stirring some more shit up. I say this because the last time I posted anything of this nature in here it was extremely poorly received, I guess because most people are more interested in glory than reality. However, I still feel that there is some good discussion that can be prodded out of this subject. So, if you'll bear with me through the personal story portion, I promise you'll be able to extract the gist of what I'm saying from the latter paragraphs of the entry.

Bute needs to go awayCollapse )

Originally posted around June 1st, but decided I want it to reach more people so I'm reposting it in more comms and on a couple outside message boards.

An Inside Look at the Bourbon Barons of Kentucky: Chris Morris of Woodford Reserve [02 May 2009|03:19pm]

gustoforrobusto
Hey guys,

Not too much longer before the Derby coverage begins. Just wanted to share this article on Woodford Reserve with you real quick, it gets into their connection with horse racing a bit and includes an interesting interview with Chris Morris.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Woodford Reserve, it is one of the first names that come to mind at the mention of premium bourbon. Its elegant, if understated, bottle is broad in form and proudly contains the award winning bourbon that has set the new industry standard. The taste is spicy, complex, and has just a touch of heat to give it enough character to keep the palate entertained while never overwhelming the tastes of a less experienced drinker. With these qualities in mind, it is a bourbon that serves well neat, as a base in cocktails, and also as a great starting point for those interested in high quality whiskey.

Drawing from the same limestone water that nourishes the bluegrass and fuels the neighboring thoroughbreds, Woodford Reserve makes full use of the elements that are unique to Kentucky while also employing practices unique to its own product. They are the only bourbon distiller to use copper pot stills, much as a single malt distillery would use. In fact, the copper pots, strikingly similar to cathedral pipe organs in appearance, were custom made for them in Scotland. They are also the only bourbon distillery historically to triple distill their whiskey, as well as the only to age their barrels in warehouses lined in 100% limestone. The limestone lining serves as a means of climate control, restricting the warehouse to warm and cool slowly.

Kentucky Derby Predictions, and more! [28 Apr 2009|01:22pm]

gustoforrobusto

The Run for the Roses, the most exciting two minutes in sports; By any name, the Kentucky Derby is annual happening like none other. Just once a year, we kick off the quest for the Triple Crown, and do so with the greatest race in the sport. The Twin Spires of Churchill Downs, the infield crazies, even the hat parade and waiter races, all are part of the Great American Tradition of the Kentucky Derby. Every year, Louisville, Kentucky transforms from one of the fair sized city of the Mid-South region, on the Ohio River, to a stylish, genteel locale, where the Mint Juleps flow freely, the burgoo is piping hot, and the race is as exciting as ever. So, for those Epicureans amongst us who want to learn more about the Kentucky Derby, the race predictions, the fan fare and the traditions, our gift to you is the Epicurean’s Guide to the Kentucky Derby.

Bosselman/Gus Fonner Handicap [23 Apr 2009|09:15pm]

pumaman4
There is a big $75,000 race this weekend at the local track here in Nebraska. It's the highest paying race in the state. There's quite a few horses that are coming in from other tracks to try and steal the purse from the locals. Just thought I'd check to see if anyone on here knows anything about some of these horses. I'm not sure where they typically hint. Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully, I can finally have a winning day at the track. It's been awhile. Here's the list:

Horse: Jockey: Trainer:
First Class Brass Armando Martinez Kelli Martinez
Jonesboro Terry Thompson Randy Morse
Tiger Lake Michael Ziegler David Anderson
Budge Man Jesus Ponce Kellyn Gorder
Larrylarrylarry Chris Fackler James Cranwell
Sebastian County Larry Sterling Jr. Don Von Hemel
The Nutz Damon Leeds Steve Hall
Prospective Kiss Tommy Molina Randy Morse
